Halifax is considered a global city, as its epicenter is filled with government buildings and many corporate headquarters. The buildings in the downtown overlook the famous Halifax town clock. The main source of revenue in the region is fishing, mining, lumber mills and the extraction of natural gas. Much takes place within the urban core of the city, which surrounds Halifax Harbour. These areas include Dartmouth and Bedford –Sackville. Many live in the suburbs and commute from Mainland Halifax, Lower Sackville and Cole Harbour into the city core for work and entertainment. Dartmouth is home to one of Canada’s great schools – Dalhousie University.
One of the greatest tragedies in Canadian history happened right in Halifax Harbour. On December 6, 1917, a French cargo ship carrying explosives for the war collided with a Norwegian ship in the Narrows of the Harbour. A fire started on the French ship, which ignited the explosives, which consequently created a massive explosion that became known as the Halifax Explosion. It totally devastated the area and over 2000 people were killed, and thousands more injured. Buildings collapsed as a result of the explosion, and debris was thrown for miles. The destruction was insurmountable, and the explosion is ingrained in the history of the city.
There is much to do and see in Halifax. The iconic town of Peggy’s Cove is a must for all. The lighthouse that sits on Peggy’s point is seen in many photos, and is something that makes Halifax distinguishable. The many restaurants, bars and the Alexander Keith’s brewery are destinations for many. The city has quite a few cultural outlets, with museums, the symphony and the theatre.
