Pod or Pro?: Moving FOMO is Real

FOMO, or the fear of missing out, is one of the biggest issues for people who are trying to figure out the best way to move. What if you hire professional movers and realize you could have done the work yourself for less money? What if you decide on a self-move and no one shows up to help? There are so many horror stories out there about moving that it can almost be crippling to decide which way to go.

In Canada alone, there are literally thousands of professional moving services, moving and relocation assistance services, rental truck companies, storage solutions, and other moving-related services out there that it could make your head spin. Keeping up with all of this can be stressful, at the very least. You should be planning every aspect of your move, beyond just the actual moving process.

Packing and Organizing Services

Some people choose to hire organizers or professional packers to assist with their move. This can be a great way to free up your time for more important things and get your move started on the right foot. Consider which of these services you can use for your move and find available companies in your area. The best way to do this is with a third-party moving services website, which will connect you to all of the resources that you need.

Keep in mind that these are optional services. You can certainly choose to take care of your own decluttering and packing. Most people do. Just know that these professional services are out there if you want them. If you choose to work with independent contractors, just make sure you read some reviews or get a few references, first.

Junk Removal Services

Once your house is all packed up and you’ve cleaned out the place, what are you doing with all of that junk? Some people are able to put it out with their trash and be done. Others have to wait for a certain trash occasion or hire professional junk removal services. If you are moving across the country, for example, you’ll probably be going over your things carefully to find anything and everything that you can get rid of.

Junk removal services usually offer rates based on the size of dumpster that you need. If you also want labour assistance to remove the junk, you’ll probably pay an hourly rate. Find companies that offer reputable service and have good ratings from previous customers. If you need commercial junk removal or hazardous material dumping, make sure that you specify this because there are different options and guidelines in place.

Cleaning Services

While you’re busy packing and planning your move, your former home could use a little TLC. Once you get everything out, you should consider investing in professional cleaning or maid services to handle your move out cleaning. Again, you can choose from a variety of services and even find companies that specialize in cleaning after someone has moved out.

If you are moving into a home that has been empty for a while, you might want to consider hiring a light maid service there, as well. Have someone come in and sweep, dust, and clean the windows before you move in so that you can just get settled when you arrive. These services aren’t usually very expensive and they will save you a lot of time and effort.

Moving Solutions

When it comes to moving services, there are a variety of options:

  • Truck rentals for self-moves
  • Full-service moving companies
  • Partial-service movers
  • Portable storage pods
  • And more

You have to take the time to look at all of your options and figure out what is going to be best for your move. If you are moving all the way across Canada, you should definitely invest in a full-service move. The hassle of going so far is exhausting enough without the extra effort of moving and hauling your own stuff.

Truck Rentals

If you are able to do the work and you have the time, a self-move is one of the most affordable options. If you know enough people with pickup trucks, you might not even have to rent a moving truck. However, if you do, the cost is nominal. Plus, some companies offer the option of hourly or daily rates, and you won’t pay a lot in mileage if you’re just moving across town.

Labor Help and Packing Services

These could all fall under partial moving services, and include a number of labor and moving solutions that don’t include a full-service move. For example, you could just hire a couple of people to help you with the moving of your items and rent your own truck. If you prefer, you could hire packers to pack your belongings before the big day. The industry offers a full selection of a la carte moving-related companies and services that can help with every type of moving need, including basic or partial services.

Portable Storage Pods

These units are increasing in popularity because they offer a whole new level of convenience for people. This is a hybrid move, of sorts, because you’re having the pod delivered and transported, but you are doing the actual moving and packing yourself. These pods can be rented from anywhere and moved anywhere, whether you’re staying local or considering a move all the way across Canada.

Portable storage offers a lot of perks for moving. You can usually get a unit for a fairly reasonable price. You can have it delivered early so that you can pack and load it at your own pace. Then you simply call for a pickup and unload it at the new place. It’s really convenient for people with busy lives and although it might seem more expensive than renting a truck, it might be worth it.

It’s All About Research

Taking the time to explore your options is critical to the success of your move. If you fail to obtain all of the services that could help you, your move will no doubt be a lot more stressful and chaotic. Take the time to get to know what services are available to you and how you can find the best ones for your moving needs.
