Avoid the Biggest Moving Day Mistakes

Moving day is getting closer and closer, and the levels of stress are really starting to rise. Even though you might think that you have everything squared away and ready to go for your move, there is a chance that you could be making one or more mistakes that will come back to haunt you. It is important to make sure that you are not making any of the common mistakes that follow. If you can be sure they won’t be a problem, your move is likely to go easier.

Waiting Until the Last Minute

Everyone who makes this mistake asks themselves what they were thinking. They get angry at their past self who was out having a good time with friends rather than getting things packed away and ready to move. You do not want to have anger issues, so make it point to get started packing the minute you realize you have to move.

Start making your plan to move, getting the supplies you need, and downsizing. The sooner you start the easier it will be. You can spread out all of the tasks across several months instead of a few days. Your future self will thank you for it.

Being a Hoarder

Trying to take too much with you can be a huge problem for a number of reasons. It will slow down the move, the items are going to continue taking space in your new home, and it could increase the cost of the move.

Therefore, you will want to reduce the amount you are taking with you. This is easy to do when you downsize properly. Take some time to go through the items to figure out what you need, what you can throw away, what you can donate or give away, and what you might be able to sell. If you have too much that you have to move on moving day, you are going to be upset. It is easy to avoid this mistake, but you will want to start well before the big day.

Not Organizing Your Boxes

Having boxes and packing supplies is simply not enough. In addition to the supplies, you need to have a plan for keeping those boxes organized. If you are not organized and if you do not label the boxes well, it means that you are going to end up having trouble finding what you need once you are in your new place. You will not know where to put the boxes in the new place on moving day either, which means kitchen items could be in the bedroom.

Even before the move, it could cause some trouble. If you find that you need to get into a box to find something important that you packed by mistake, having them fully labeled will make it much easier for you.

Forgetting to Turn on Utilities

Getting into your new place should be a great feeling. You should be able to walk in, turn on the lights, and start unpacking the same night that you arrive. However, that will not happen if you did not remember to turn on the utilities in the new place. This is one of the most important things for you to do, but people also tend to forget to do it because they have so many other things on their mind.

Not Packing a Survival Box

During the first couple of days at the new place, you will want to make sure that you have easy access to the items you need the most. Having great labels will help and having a special box or bag for each member of the family with their “survival gear” is a good idea, too. You can place different items into these bags and boxes, such as favorite snacks, chargers for electronics, comfortable clothes, and the like.

Not Thinking About Pet Transportation

If you have some pets that you will be taking along with you on your move, you have to think about just how you are going to transport them. Different types of pets will have different needs to be met. This is something that you should start thinking about long before the actual move, as it could change your travel plans somewhat.

Not Keeping Important Documents and Info Safe

You probably have quite a few important documents and valuables that you need to keep safe and sound. This could include the deed to a new home, insurance papers, a will, cash, jewelry, and similar items. You do not want anything to happen to those items, so rather than putting them onto a moving truck, you may want to keep them with you, so you will be responsible for them.

Trying It All on Your Own

Perhaps the biggest moving day mistake is thinking that you are not going to need to have any help. Moving is a monstrous task, and it will be much easier when you have some help. This help might come in the form of some friends who are helping you pack, or in the form of a professional moving company that can load and unload your boxes for you. Having help with the moving, the cleaning, and all of the other elements of moving will be well worth the price you pay.
