Top Things to Consider for a Cross Country Move

So, you have a big move coming up soon.

Maybe you are moving for work, or maybe you just want a change of pace in your life. Perhaps you are moving from Montreal to Vancouver or from Calgary to Toronto.

There are plenty of reasons that you might need to move all the way across the country.

Even when you are thrilled about the prospect of moving, though, the actual move will carry a lot of stress with it.

You want to find ways that you can eliminate that stress as much as possible. The following are some things you will want to consider and some tips to help make your experience easier.

Begin the Purge

One of the first things that you should do – and you really should start doing it right now – is start the purge.

We’re not talking about The Purge movie, of course.

We’re talking about getting rid of a lot of items that you just don’t need any longer and that would essentially be a waste to move all the way across the country. The more you are able to get rid of now the easier it will be to move.

Go through all of the belongings that you have and cull the ones that you no longer need or that you don’t use very often.

You will likely have several different “piles” of items when you do this. You will have those items that are not working properly or that have issues with them. These can be thrown out or recycled.

However, you might also have other items that are still in good shape, but you just don’t need them any longer. With these, you can try to sell some of them to earn a little extra money. The items that you can’t sell could be given away to friends and family who need them, or they could be sent to charity.

When you are able to reduce the amount that you will have to take with you on your long distance move to Montreal or London, Ontario, it will be a great feeling. You are actually reducing the load that you have to take with you, which makes the move easier and cheaper. However, that’s just one of the things to consider on your cross country move.

Take Care of Your Utilities

Know the dates of your move, so you can take care of the utilities.

You need to turn off the utilities in your name when you are leaving your current home, and you will want to make sure that they are all turned on by the time you arrive in your new residence.

Of course, some of the utilities may require that you are located at the home before they can be added. For example, cable and Internet companies will likely need to have someone there who can be on the premises when everything is set up.

If you need to have your Internet and cable ready to go on the day that you arrive, you might want to get in touch with a friend or a family member who lives in the area. Ask them if they might be willing to spend a couple of hours waiting for the cable and Internet company to arrive. This way, the web will be up and running when you get there.

Of course, if you ask someone to do this for you, be sure you do something extra nice for them, as waiting around for the cable installer is no one’s idea of a good time.

Start Packing Right Now

When you talk about moving across the country, it can become overwhelming very quickly.

This feeling can cause some people to avoid packing until the last minute. This is one of the worst things that you can do because it will catch up to you.

Before you know it, the moving trucks will be on their way and you will have to run around throwing everything in boxes at the last minute.

That’s a terrible feeling.

Just take a deep breath and start your packing as early as possible. It might mean starting the work of packing early, but you will be glad that you did since it can make everything else so much easier.

When you plan early, it means less stress.

Plan Your Trip to the New Location

You also need to think about how you, not just your belongings, will be getting to the new destination.

You need to be sure that you are planning your trip accordingly whether you will be flying, or you are driving.

If you are flying, will you be shipping your vehicle across Canada?

If you are driving, how long have you allotted for your trip?

Make sure that you plot out the route meticulously, so you know where you can stop along the way for rest and for food. Also, be sure that someone will be there when the movers arrive at your new place.

Work With Movers Instead of Trying It on Your Own

Can you plan a move across the country move on your own?

You could, but why would you want to do such a thing. You will find that hiring professionals to help with your move can be a much better option. They can make the move faster and easier, and some of the moving companies can even offer specialized services, such as cleaning and painting if you need it.

Always make sure that you find and compare moving estimates from different companies to be sure you are getting the best in prices and services.

With these tips, your long distance move will be easier than you might have thought it could be.

Sure, it is still a lot of work, but when you start early, get rid of a lot of belongings, and you are working with a quality moving company, it will make the entire experience much simpler for you.

If you have an upcoming move, get started with your planning right now.
