Tips for Packing Before the Cross Canada Move

So, you are going to be packing up your belongings and moving all the way across the great nation of Canada. This is a huge move and not something that anyone considers lightly. It takes a lot of work and there is a good chance that you will be under some mounting stress as the move date gets closer and closer. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do that will make the packing process quite a bit easier.

Start Right Now

The biggest and most important tip to remember when it comes to moving is that it is never too early to start. If you know that you will be moving, even if you won’t be making the actual move for several months, the best time to start packing is right now. The sooner you start, the less stressed you will be as the move date draws near. However, this tends not to be the way that most people do things. They instead wait until they have only a couple of weeks or even a couple of days before they get started. This is why stress levels skyrocket.

Do not be like those people. Instead, you will want to make sure that you begin the process of moving right away. Come up with a schedule for getting rid of items and decluttering, and then make a list of all of the items that have to be moved with you, and which ones can be packed right away and which ones will be able to wait until later. When you have a schedule helping you, it really will make the rest of the process much easier.

Donations and Dollar Signs

It is important that you stick to your schedule of getting rid of items. Separate your belongings into different categories. You want to group them into those that can be kept, those that should be donated, sold, or given away, and those that should be thrown away or recycled.

Donating items can be a nice option, as it could be a tax write-off depending on just how much you are donating. In addition, if you have some good items that you no longer want or need, you can also sell them. Sell them online or have a garage sale. You can use the money that you receive from the sale of the items to fund a going away party or help with the move.

The Packing Materials

It is important that you start to gather packing materials, as well. This means boxes, tape, markers for labeling, newspapers and bubble wrap for keeping fragile items safe, and similar items. When you are getting these items, you will often find that the boxes tend to be easy enough to find, and you might not have to buy any. You will need to make sure that you have some good quality packing tape, though, and plenty of it. It tends to be better to have more packing supplies than you think you will need rather than not having enough and needing to run around at the last minute.

One of the big benefits of starting to pack early though is that you don’t need to buy all of these materials at once. Since you are packing over time, you will also have a better idea of just how much more material you will need to complete the job.

Packing Right

If you really want the move to be easy on the packing end and the unpacking end, you need to pack properly. What does this mean? It means several things, actually. First, you should be packing certain items from the minute you find out that you will be moving. These are the items that you won’t need right away, until after you are settled into your new place. Packing right also means that you are packing light. You do not want to have boxes that are so heavy that you can’t lift them. The movers will not be happy about that either and they might even have their own per box weight limits.

Packing right also means that you should label the box properly. Instead of just labeling that it is a box for the kitchen, go above and beyond. Make sure everything in the box is labeled. You could type out the contents of the boxes, print them, and then make a packing label that you put on the outside of the box, so you know everything that is in it.

Get Rid of Distractions

Distractions, particularly electronic distractions, tend to be the main reason that people don’t pack when they should. Make it a point to get rid of these distractions when it comes time to pack. If you don’t, you will likely end up with a half-packed box and an hour of scrolling through Facebook or Twitter. The latter doesn’t really help to get things done. Of course, there are other distractions for other people. Figure out what it is that distracts you and make sure you eliminate it before you start packing.

Hiring the Pros to Make the Move Easier

There are so many aspects to moving that are no fun that it is no wonder that people hate to do it. It tends to be one of the most stressful times in a person’s life, and most people end up moving several times.
