When Should You Move?

Do you have any control over when you will be moving? Sometimes, you don’t have quite as much control as you might like, and that means you could end up moving during a part of the year that isn’t ideal for you. You might find out that you have a job opportunity in Vancouver, and you have to move right away, for example. Other times, you might need to move because of school. There are many times when you really can’t choose when you move.

However, there are still cases where you will have control over the time of year that you move, as well as the time of the week and the time of day. Knowing when you should move can make a real difference in reducing the amount of stress that you will face on moving day. Let’s look at some of the things you will want to consider.

Time of Year

This might not be something that you will be able to control, but if you can, it can make a difference during your move. You will find that most people tend to move in the late spring and early summer months. This is because it is the time when kids are off from school. Parents don’t want to pull their kids out of school in the middle of the year, and those who are going to college wouldn’t need to move until the end of summer and close to when the new year starts.

This means that the competition for finding moving companies and services tends to be greater during this time. It can be more difficult to find a moving company during this time when you are searching on your own simply because they are so busy.

If you are able to avoid moving during the summer, you will find that the fall and even the spring can work well. While the cheapest time of the year to move tends to be during the winter, it does mean that you will have to contend with the weather, which is something that many people are likely hoping to avoid.

Time of the Month

When you are moving, regardless of the season, you will find that if you are able to move during the middle of the month, it is likely to be cheaper. The reasons for this are simple. Most people are moving near the start or end of the month because that is when they need to be out of their old place and into their new place. This means more people will be looking for moving help during those times of the month, and it could be more expensive. By waiting until the middle of the month, even though it might not seem convenient, you could save money. It could be worth it for you.

Day of the Week

Most of the time, people move on the weekend. They might even take Friday off from work and then move over the course of three days. However, if you hope to move when there is less demand, you might want to consider moving between Monday and Thursday instead. This will be easier on not only your wallet, but you will find that the roads during the week tend to be less congested than during the weekend. Of course, this will assume that you are not traveling during rush hour.

The Time of Day

Something else that you will want to consider when you are putting together your moving plan is the time of day that you will be moving. While this might not seem important, it really can be! You don’t want to hit morning or evening rush hour, as that will slow things down considerably for you and the movers. Instead, you will find that it tends to be a good idea to make sure that you are moving in the morning after the main rush and before noon.

Not only will this make sure that you are not hitting traffic as people are on their way to work, but it also ensures that you miss the lunch rush when many areas tend to get busier. If you can move in the morning, it also means that you will have the afternoon to relax and start unpacking. Another benefit of this is that you don’t have to worry about a moving truck getting in the way of the neighbors since most will already be at work.

What Else Should You Consider When Planning the Move?

As you are planning for the best time to move, the above can help, but you also need to think about other factors that have the potential to play a role. If you have a child who is in school, then moving any other time of the year than during the summer is probably a bad idea, for example. Try to let them finish out the school year in their current school if you can.

It is a good idea to consider the weather, too. If it tends to rain or snow in your area a lot during certain times of the year, it might be better to wait until the weather improves if you can. That’s not to say that you can’t move in the snow and rain… it’s just not very pleasant.

Always consider when you need to move by, the location, family needs, your work schedule, and the budget. Then, attempt to have your move fall into at least one of the categories above, whether it is the right time of day or the right time of year. This can help you to save some money, as well as frustration.
