How to Make Your Long Distance Move Across Canada Easier

You will be moving long distance across Canada, and you are already starting to dread just about every aspect of the move. Sure, it will be great once you are in the new place and unpacked.

However, that’s still a long way off and there is what seems like an insurmountable amount of work ahead of you.

You can’t throw in the towel, though, and you need to take a deep breath and get ready to move. We know the feeling, but we have a different attitude toward moving. Moving is literally what we do.

Therefore, you can trust us when we present you with the following tips that will make your move across Canada, whether you are heading to Vancouver or Toronto, much easier.

Start Early

You won’t like to hear this but the best time to start your move is probably right now. If you know you will be moving, even if you are still several weeks away from the move, you will want to get started. This ensures that you don’t become overwhelmed with too much work later.

Consider the Regulations for Moving into the New Neighborhood or Building

When you are choosing your day for moving into your new place, and out of your old place, you need to be considerate of the neighbors and the regulations that are in place in the community. Are there certain days in the building that moving is not allowed? What is the latest at night that you can move into the building? If you are moving into a community with an HOA, check for the rules.

Downsize the Junk

Here’s a surefire way to make the move easier and potentially cheaper. It is high time that you got rid of all of the junk that you have been collecting for who knows how many years. If you haven’t used it or enjoyed it in a while, you probably don’t need it.

By getting rid of the junk, you are reducing the amount that you will have to pack and haul along with you. The less you plan to take the less you will have to pack. That is math that everyone can enjoy.

Proper Labeling and Organization Is Essential

You will be packing up a lot of boxes for your move, right?

It sure can be tempting to just say, “to heck with it” after the first couple of boxes and then just start throwing everything into those boxes willy-nilly like they are cardboard junk drawers. Avoid this temptation. Sure, you might be able to “pack” faster, but you aren’t packing right.

Things will get damaged, and you will have no idea where you packed half of your stuff. Instead, label the boxes properly and make sure that you actually note the items that are in each of the boxes on the labels. It might take a few minutes extra right now, but it will make finding things during the unpacking phase much easier.

Put the Mattress in a Box

You are probably going to be taking your mattresses with you rather than buying brand new ones. However, don’t just stand them up in the moving truck. Instead, get an actual mattress box for each of the mattresses that you plan to take along with you and use them. These will help to keep the mattress safe while it is being shipped.

Don’t Pack Most Food and Liquids

Whether it is cleaning products or beverages, you don’t want to pack liquids when you are moving. There is a chance of them becoming damaged in transit and causing a spill in the truck. This could get onto your other belongings, ruining them. You don’t want to pack most types of food either. There is a chance it could go bad when it is being transported. The only exceptions might be some boxed pasta, rice, and similar items. However, even then, you might be better off giving the food to charity and then just buying new food when you arrive. This way, you have to haul less with you on the move, which can help to make the move cheaper.

Keep the Items You Need on Arrival With You

You might be surprised how many people forget this when they are moving. They end up packing absolutely everything they own except the clothes on their back, the shoes they are wearing, and their wallet and keys. They get to their new home and they find that they don’t have what they need to make it through the first night, such as the phone charger, snacks, and a change of clothes. If the moving truck is late, this could end up being a problem.

For dinner the first night, you might want to grab some fast food or go out for dinner. Make sure you know enough about the area to figure out where to get some food, and any other items you need right away on that first night.

Choose a Quality Moving Company

If you plan to move across Canada, or even across town, you will need to have a great moving company that can help you. Take the time to look up some Google reviews about the moving company and find and compare moving estimates. Make sure they can provide you with the services you need.

You Don’t Have to Unpack in a Day

It is also very important that you take time to relax once you are in the new property. There will be a temptation to start unpacking all of the boxes once they have come into the house. Resist this on your first night. Only unpack the items that are essential. The rest can wait for the next couple of days.

Moving still won’t be fun with these tips, but it will be easier for you.

Make sure you use these tips and work with a moving company that can help to make the entire process even easier for you.
